DNS (Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization)
In the early years of life, our nervous system develops proper programs for movement, posture, and gait unconsciously. As we mature and grow, our body changes and so do our movement patterns. In some cases, we develop improper patterns that eventually cause strain on various joints and muscles within the body. DNS is used to retrain the body and central nervous system to work properly. It analyzes infantile movements and is developed into a series of exercises that retrain your body on how to move, highlighting stabilization and joint centration. This then improves motor patterns and reduces pain associated with instability and poor mechanics. We used this technique if: You were assigned exercises that look like the baby posters on the rehab wall.Drs Zach Shiels, DC, Moira Martin, DC, & Adam Cosson, DC

Cedarburg, WI 53012Dry Needling
Dry needling is also called trigger point dry needling or myofascial trigger point dry needling. This technique is often done by acupuncturists, some chiropractors, medical doctors, and some physical therapists. Sometimes, our muscles develop knotted areas that are usually painful or very sensitive when touched. These knotted areas are also called trigger points. Clinicians push very thin but solid needles through the skin and into the muscular tissue at these trigger points to stimulate tissue repair and relieve pain while also improving range of motion. There is very minimal pain that occurs during the dry needling process. One might experience muscle soreness, aching, and a muscle twitch which are all to be considered good signs. We referred out for this technique.Dr. Peter Arndt, DPT

ART is a soft-tissue technique which can be used to treat any soft tissue in the body: muscle/tendon, ligament, fascia, nerve and, in some cases, cartilage. ART uses patient movement while tension is applied to specific tissues, generating more pliability and movement. We used this technique if: You moved through different movements while pressure was applied by hand.

The McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT) is widely used for assessing and treating spinal and extremity pain. MDT finds a position of relief that we use repeatedly. After doing the repeated bouts of movement, you will grade your symptoms on a scale. How your symptoms range helps us determine the underlying cause of your pain and give us further evidence to determine the best care. We used this technique if: You were assigned “stoplight” exercises, graded “red, yellow, & green to be performed frequently.

Brookfield, WI 53045Chiropractic Adjusting
Chiropractic adjustment is a procedure in which a trained specialist use their hands or a small tool to apply a controlled sudden force to a spinal joint. Your case, your concerns, and the purpose of using the adjustment will change which techniques are used. However, the procedure’s goal is to improve joint motion and function along with improving your body’s all over function. We use primarily diversified, drop, & flexion distraction (F&D) techniques. We also frequently adjusted extremities. Other techniques we may have used include Activator & Pelvic Blocking.

This technique is an “umbrella” that contains numerous techniques, including Guasha, Graston, FAKTR, and Rock Blades, among others. IASTM uses an instrument or tool, used in combination with an oil or lotion applied to the skin. The tissue is then gently “scraped”. We used this technique if: a metal tool, with a beveled edge, was used to “scrape” through tissues.

Wauwatosa, WI 53213Functional Medicine
Functional medicine varies from conventional medicine in terms of being health-oriented versus disease-oriented. Functional medicine addresses the “whole person” and not just a set of symptoms. A Functional Medicine Practitioner recognizes that the body, mind, and spirit are interrelated and all influence your overall wellness as well as your current health concerns. Functional medicine emphasizes the relationship between the patient and the practitioner in the healing process while also incorporating conventional and complementary medicine methods. We referred out for this expertise.

Brookfield, WI 53045Functional Rehabilitation
Functional rehabilitation is designed to return an athlete or worker back to optimal-level performance post-injury. Functional rehabilitation focuses on strength, flexibility and agility training in addition to coordination of body parts. Any rehab, other than post-surgical, was functional. This is a different philosophy & style than traditional rehab which uses standard progressions for injuries.
